Dear Mallika Dua, Sorry to Say, But Your Views on Board Exam Results are Very Flawed

We love you but you've got it all wrong.

When Mallika Dua gave us 'Shit People Say: Sarojini Nagar Edition', she took no time to become one of our favourite comedians. So when she decided to post her opinion on the recent board exams results, there was no way her fans wouldn't notice.

For students, the month of May is an anxious one. Their "fate" is sealed by the marks they score in 10th and 12th, as we are told. Interviews of toppers are flashed on television sets and the ones who do not fare well probably get to hear 'Sharma ji ka beta' jokes, forever.

On an Instagram post, where the comedian has 496k followers, Dua took a stand around board exams. She wrote, "Frunz I got 69% in my 12 boards. I got into all the good colleges through ECA. I flunked exams in college also thereafter during my one year in DU. Then I went abroad and only did well once I wasn't expected to mug shit up and then do ulti(vomit) of that on paper. I did really well then (sic)."

She said that board exam results are "lame" and "unimportant". "Guys don't be sad or too happy about board result. It's lame and it doesn't matter. Good for you if you did well but it doesn't matter. Cheers!"

Well, Mallika Dua may have a point but let's admit it, marks are important, at least in our country. They may not necessarily define a person, but it is essential to have a safety net. They do open important doors. Kids who score well DO have the liberty to explore opportunities of their liking and fall back on their mark sheet if they fail in their endeavours.

But for those who do not score well, getting into a decent college is also difficult.



But the problem with Dua's opinion that marks do not matter because she went abroad after failing in DU is very, very flawed. Like, good for you Mallika Dua but what about the students who cannot afford to go abroad? And failing in University would essentially mean repeating a year. There's no short cut in here.

When these people (apparent role models) say 'marks don't matter', it often comes from a very privileged mindset. Well, it may not have been important in their case because they had a different set of talents, had the freedom to drop out, and the financial backing to do so. Marks do matter in a country that has a ridiculous population such as ours, where MBA graduates land clerical jobs, where education loans are often WAY more than salary packages.



But it didn't end there. When many pointed out her flawed opinion, she wouldn't take it. When someone commented, "Not every like you is a Papa ki Pari, Ms Dua. Not all parents can afford to send their children abroad to a fancy ass school in New York. So yes, whatever we score is important, at least for the time being. Stop being a preachy preach. Please." Dua instantly started calling her names.

"I request you stop being such a disgruntled excuse monger. Do something better with your life instead of making a shoddy excuse for sheer stupidity and mediocrity. Plenty of idiots have gone to a fancy ass school in New York and not done much after and plenty haven't had the marks or the money and have done SO much more so feed that bird brain a little more information so you become a little more than an Instagram troll in life."



When another person pointed out that she need not be so hostile to defend her point, Dua called him a 'cow'. (Yep, we are also quite confused here). Then, when someone else asked her what happens to the people who can't afford to go abroad, her response was "find a more convincing excuse to defend mediocrity."

Of course, Mallika Dua is entitled to her opinion but how is it alright to call people names when they don't agree with you?
